Whew, so I’ve barely posted for the past two weeks on account of moving and getting things sorted, so it gave me a lot of time to think about the comments on my last post, and I think I’ve come up with a workable solution for the folks who are uncomfortable with these posts.

I’ve paid my web host to set up a subdomain. This means that you can block images from this subdomain if you so choose, without blocking every single image hosted on my website. That means you can read my comics even if you block these images.

I also set up a little handy button right here that is completely and totally unremarkable so you can block the images without scrolling any further down the page and looking at pictures that might be problematic for you.

If you’re on a PC, you can right-click and block all the images on this subdomain. If you are on a Mac, hit CTRL-click, and then you can block the images. The subject line will always stay the same so I am hoping that will serve as significant warning to scroll past. If it’s JUST the images that bother you, then feel free to read!

Okay! Now that that’s done, on to the actual fitnessy stuff.

<lj user="whirled"> started doing some good requirements that I really like. For example, she started drinking more water. I made a pledge to drink the required 8 cups of water a day…before I found out that they meant 8 8-oz cups. I well exceed that in a normal day, just from going to the water cooler at work! Our cups at work are 16 oz! So I was thinking I would have to drink 16 oz. eight times, but no! Just four times, which is way less water than I drink in a day. But I have been keeping better tabs on my water intake.

Moving put a damper on my exercising, and I can’t go home and exercise at lunch anymore, but I did a heck of a lot of packing and moving boxes and unpacking, and I did make sure I walked a lot, so I am betting that I got an equivalent amount of exercise. Plus, I am freaking covered with box-moving bruises (you can see a lovely purple one on my ribcage below) I am pledging to but myself either an elliptical or an exercise bike for the new apartment; I think it would be a good investment, and I have room for it now. But I do need to get back into doing exercising and stretching this week. I moved into a fourth-floor apartment, and even though it has an elevator, I’ve been trying to make myself walk the stairs as much as possible. And my new subway is an elevated train so I walk stairs there, too! The biggest problem is that that doesn’t help my arms, and my arms are really what need the most help.

I’ve also been committing myself to eating dinners I prepare myself, now that I have a real separate kitchen with prep space. I have been making food ahead so I can just pull it out when I’m hungry. Also, I made blueberry sorbet which is freaking delicious. The other thing I have to work on is my lunchtime meals, since I can’t go home for lunch anymore. It would be both more economical and healthier to prep lunch at home and bring it, but it won’t be as tasty, fresh or convenient. So I’ll have to figure that one out. In the meantime, I peeled carrots ahead of time so I can munch on them whenever I want, instead of buying the pre-peeled ones from the store.

One thing I need to work on is eating more protein. I eat a good amount of veggies as it is but I often forget the protein. I also need to start walking at lunch, I think, even if I have nowhere to go.

Pics this week are in new apartment! And once again, if you don’t feel you can look at the pics, you can block them without blocking anything else on my site.

I went to see Inception yesterday morning and I wanted to write up my thoughts about it.

For people who haven’t seen it yet, it’s a movie about a team of people who go into people’s dreams to steal information. Early on in the film, we learn that the title, Inception, refers to the much more difficult task of planting information in a person’s dream. It’s not a super new idea– Neil Gaiman played with similar ideas in Sandman, and there’s a bit of the same concept in City of Lost Children, and I assume it’s much older than that, but those are the two examples foremost in my mind, but applying the concept to a modern-day action movie is pretty new, as far as I know.

From here on in, this is going to be pretty spoilertastic stuff if you haven’t see it yet, but I also don’t feel like it’s the kind of movie that can be spoiled, except for a lone single shot that doesn’t effect the plot of the film. People who’ve seen the movie know what lone single shot I mean.

People who haven’t seen it and want to remain completely unspoiled, the short version goes, I enjoyed it, but there were a lot of things I was hoping for that weren’t there, and a lot of things that disappointed me about it.

To start off, for a movie with such a unique underlying premise, the main character story arc is so completely done already that not only has it been done, but it was done by Leonardo DiCaprio in the last big suspense-type movie he was in. Character’s psyche at war because he blames himself for death of love interest who had lost grip on reality and done something terrible, check. I found myself having very little interest in Cobb’s character or his backstory, and since he’s really the only character we get a deep look at, a large part of the movie was lost on me. Which is too bad, because I think Leonardo DiCaprio is always a superlative actor, and he wasn’t disappointing in the way he portrayed Cobb, but it was just a tired character trope.

What character did I want to see more about?

Saito. I think one of the failings of the movie was that this guy seems to be a pretty good guy with pretty populist interests at stake– he wants to break up the Fischer empire because he sees them as a destructive and exploitative monopoly– but we never find out why he was Cobb’s mark at the beginning of the movie, or who the people who had hired Cobb were– in fact, they completely disappear after the Mombasa scene (which seemed to come out of nowhere–why Mombasa? None of the characters they were meeting were Kenyan, and it was one of those “let’s randomly use African people as props for white people to jump over and knock aside” moments). And I would have liked to have known that. It would have been neat to have just made Fischer’s company be the one who had hired Cobb to steal information from Saito in the first place. I know Nolan is a big Hitchcock fan and I assume he was setting up a classic MacGuffin here, but it didn’t really play out…it just vanished and its absence was more conspicuous to me than it should have been.

But more than that, here’s this guy who has a backstory with Cobb, and we don’t know what it is. He knows about dream extraction– how?

And then he winds up living in dream limbo for decades, and we never see any of that. I wanted to see the story of the man stuck in dream limbo, and how it changed him. I was expecting it to be a more major plot point that simply a plot to have this mysterious intro sequence– I was thinking maybe after all those years in limbo, Saito might have decided that he’d changed his mind about Fischer, or something like that. How did he adapt to limbo? Why are there other people inhabiting his limbo, when Cobb & Mal’s limbo was empty?

Mal was also problematic for me in some regards. Actually, I thought she was a really fascinating character, and Marion Cotillard was perfect, but I was frustrated that, while there were only two major female characters in the film, one of them turns out to simply be a construct of a man’s imagination, and doesn’t actually have much in the way of personal agency. She’s the one who goes mad– we’ve got the typical trope of the gaslit woman, and the woman whose mental fortitude just wasn’t as strong as her husband’s. I had been hoping for something, assuming the general plot was still intact, where Mal might have been part of one of Cobb’s teams and she’d gotten stuck in limbo and never returned, or trapped in a dream, or that she was the inception, that she was an idea that had become so powerful that she had her own agency. I think that would have been a much more awesome premise, personally.

I also felt like Ellen Page wasn’t the right choice for that role. The moments where Ellen Page is really finest for me, are the moments of raw emotionality. The best scene in all of Juno isn’t any of the scenes full of witty quips, but the scene where she finally breaks down over the steering wheel of her car; the way that woman displays emotion on camera is so incredibly genuine that I felt like she was wasted in the part of the person who spent all her time watching someone else display emotion. I also didn’t buy her as this precocious dream architect, for reasons which dovetail with my last criticism of the film:

The dreamscapes completely threw my suspension of disbelief. Because they were not anything like dreamscapes.

The dreamscapes were too much like real places that one could actually go to or find or see. Not only that, but they obeyed laws of physics in ways that didn’t make sense– because they were too much like real world physics. After the scene where Ellen Page and Leonardo DiCaprio go all crazy-physics-happy, they actually do very little to exploit the possibilities of dreamscapes. The only point where we see the paradoxes they make such a point of bringing up is in the scene where Arthur uses the same paradox they showed us earlier with the starcase– nothing new, nothing completely and totally outside of the realm of possibility of everyday life. And that, for me, is the biggest draw as far as seeing a movie about dreams– I want to see the kinds of things so impossible that only our subconscious could think them up, not a stereotypical kidnapping scenario followed by a stereotypical hotel followed by a stereotypical breaking-into-a-remote-compound. Why didn’t they get rescued by giant candy canes? Why aren’t there talking sofas? Why, when they lose gravity in the hotel, does Arthur have to come up with a way to drop everyone that obeys the laws of physics. It’s a dream. If he wants them to fall, it doesn’t matter if there’s no gravity; they’ll still fall. Or if they won’t, why can’t he shrink them and stuff them all inside a gumball machine and then feed the gumball machine enough change to drop them all out the slot? That’s what happens in dreams. That’s the beauty of dreams, and I didn’t feel like Inception captured that at all.

The only place we see an inkling that that might be happening outside of the scene where Ariadne (haha, clever name for a woman who designs mazes) learns about dream architecture is in limbo, but like I said above, limbo isn’t really fully explored the way I would have hoped.

Another thing that I didn’t get was why they would have made Fischer’s dreams so violent and negative. They make a big point in the movie about how positive reinforcement of the idea is the right way to go– so why a kidnapping? Why break into a compound? Why not something more uplifting, more inspirational?

That being said, the scene between Cillian Murphy and Pete Postlethwaite where Maurice tells Robert (Haha, his name is Bobby Fischer because he’s a pawn, get it?) what he said before he died is perfectly played and I just thought an excellent climax. I thought the Fischers were great characters, and Cillian Murphy was great in this. Again, like Saito, I found them more interesting than Cobb, and would have liked to see more about them and involving them.

I don’t want to make it sound like I didn’t like the movie, because I did. I found it thoroughly enjoyable, but I found it thoroughly enjoyable on the same level that I find many action movies with tight plots and stellar casts to be enjoyable, but no more, and I was really banking on this being a much more highly fantasist film than it was. That it wasn’t was a bit of a letdown.

The last shot was not, though. Way to thumb your nose at all those people who’ve come to expect a twist ending from everything, Christopher Nolan. That was freaking brilliant.

I had a dream last night, that was very telling and certainly inspired by many of my feelings about moving out of the city.

Before I describe the dream to you, there is one detail that I need to explain:

Ribollita is an Italian soup. Its name literally means “reboiled,” and it’s pretty much: leftover soup. But the idea is that you take leftover minestrone soup and boil the crap out of it so that the veggies get really mushy, and then you pour it over day-old bread.

Here is Giada DeLaurentiis’ recipe for it, if anyone is curious.

You will understand when I describe the dream why this is so important.

Most of you know that I frequently dream stories that i am not in, stories that are like I’m viewing a movie. For example, two nights ago I had a dream about a cartoon television show that was like a cross between Venture Bros. and beatonna’s comics. It starred a time-traveling Roman gladiator who was a sort of Brock Samson-esque character who was fighting in the Napoleonic Wars. There was a scene where he pumped his fist at the heavens and shouted “Nooooo!” So that’s what my dreams are usually like.

But in this dream, it was about me.

I was in my new apartment in Queens, unpacking some stuff, alone. It was the evening.

The phone rang.

Another thing you have to know to truly appreciate this dream is that I have not had a landline since I lived in Boston in 2005, and before Boston, I hadn’t had a landline since 2001. When I called Time Warner Cable to get my service switched to the new address, they told me that my bill would actually be cheaper if I added a landline service. Like, by $13 a month. So I added a landline. I don’t even have a phone to plug in, but I will have a line.

Now, in the dream, I was answering my landline.

It was my godmother, who lives in Colorado.

“Are you home?” she asked. It was a weird question, because she called my landline.

“Yes,” I answered.

“It’s happened,” she said.

“What’s happened?” I asked.

“The Ribollita,” she said. “And they say there are fumes heading toward Queen.”

Now, she wasn’t talking about soup. And in my dream, I knew what she was talking about, because the word didn’t mean soup. It meant something that filled my heart with terror.

Again, I have to stop and explain something. In New York City, there is a section of the island of Manhattan where the bedrock is too far below the surface to build skyscrapers– if you’ve ever been to Manhattan, you would know that this is the downtown section between the Financial District and Midtown, where skyscrapers are possible.

In my dream, the Ribollita was a term for a hypothetical geological phenomenon whereby the massive construction in the upper and very lower portion of Manhattan would somehow cause the deeper bedrock in that middle section to buckle and send a massive seismic wave through the island.

I’m not sure how I would have not realized this was going on, or felt any kind of effect from it just across the river, but there you have it. And why in my dream, this phenomenon was named for a kind of soup is beyond me.

So, I gathered up my computer and a few things to take with me, and went outside to wait– and of course to see the effects. A few blocks away from where I am going to live, you can see the whole city skyline, so I went over there, and ran into someone– a woman I know, but I don’t remember who, it might not be someone I actually know in real life– and scanned the skyline. Of course, there were lots of weird spatial anomalies thanks to it being a dream, and when I got to the Empire State Building, it was standing at such an extreme angle that the spire of it was hanging over my head, and bricks were falling from it– yes, I know how completely implausible it is for there to be bricks falling from the ESB, but there you have it.

The river was alight with boats of people trying to escape Manhattan.

And then a brick flew from the other direction, over my head. I turned around, and there was a little boy standing there. I scolded him for throwing a brick.

“They’re angry at us,” he told me.

“Who is?” I asked.

“They are. They did this, because they’re angry.”

I asked again, who.

“I’ll show you,” he said. “Come with me.” And he started walking into a subway tunnel– of course, you should also know that in the area I’m moving to, the nearest subways are overhead, not underground.

But that’s when my alarm rang and I had to go to work.

I still can’t get over the idea that I dreamed of a disaster named after a soup.

For those of you who have known me for a while, you may have realized that I’ve moved at least once a year since 2004.

In 2004, I moved twice, once across state lines. In 2005, I moved three times, all three times across state lines. In 2006, I had a sort of mini-move that lasted all of a few weeks, then back, then another move. In 2007-2009, I moved once a year.

I really like my current apartment, and I was hoping and expecting to stay here longer, but my landlord tried to raise my rent $200/month with less than six weeks’ notice to the end of term (and yes, for those who might ask, this is legal, if obnoxious).

Sick of horrible Manhattan landlords, and suspecting that Manhattan brokers deliberately put people in apartments that will turn out to be short term so they can get another fee the next year, I decided that maybe it was time to move to Queens.

I started looking in Astoria, but Brendan, my boss and friend, suggested the neighborhood where he and Rina live, and gave me the number of the brokerage they used when they found the home they currently live in.

I made an appointment, and went out looking at apartments. It’s about a half-hour from Manhattan, but with that you get bigger spaces, cheaper rents AND cheaper groceries. I liked the first place I saw, and though I looked at some others (one so big I had no idea what I would do with it), I settled on in quickly.

Let me tell you a few things. My bedroom will be bigger than my current living room. My kitchen will be the size of my bedroom. My bedroom will have more windows than my entire apartment. I look out on a quiet, tree-lined street instead of an airshaft. My electric bill will be included in the cost of the rent.

And for all of this, I will actually be closer to a movie theater and closer to a grocery store than I am now in Manhattan.

Some (likely) closing words on the “I Write Like” Meme (apartment photos and general life updates still to come). I just wanted to address some of the key questions I saw raised repeatedly today as the conversation got very large and I wasn’t able to reply to everyone individually.

1) It appears that several new authors were added to the “I Write Like” meme. Confirmed: Margaret Mitchell, Mary Shelley, Stephenie Meyer, Ursula LeGuin, Agatha Christie, David Foster Wallace.

I have not seen or heard anything about any authors of color being added. Which is, as nojojojo said, making it worse, because at this point he’s knowingly being exclusionary, especially since I’ve seen multiple people suggest authors of color to him directly.

2) I have heard multiple reports that he is no longer approving comments from people who question this issue on his blog. However, he said that he will take suggestions with the hashtag #iwlvote on twitter, and he can’t really do anything about people who comment to @iwritelike on twitter.

3) Many people brought up questions about the original included list. Dmitry said to me yesterday in a private email that the list was gleaned from two sources: top bestsellers listed on Wikipedia, and the top downloads list on Project Gutenberg. While those lists are obviously skewed toward white men to begin with, there were female authors and authors of color on both lists who never appeared to be in the meme, which means that there was some editorial choice on his part about which authors on those lists to include– and which to exclude.

4) This is the first time I’ve posted a post of this nature since I started blogging more seriously off-livejournal. It’s interesting to note that while the vast majority of people who responded to this post on livejournal commented in agreement with the concerns I raised, and the people who didn’t approached the subject with honest questions, the majority of (far fewer) comments on my personal blog at Antagonia.net were criticizing my post, and not in a thoughtful or friendly manner, either. It was interesting to me to see the difference.

5) I just wanted to share the email my father sent to the meme’s creator after reading my blog. My father is a middle-aged white man, just in case anyone is curious.

My friends and I were excited to see this enjoyable “game”. However, it became clear that even though your idea is really good , your execution is lacking.

If you want to really provide something more “professional” you simply
should consider:

    1. Including more writers
2. Including different ethnic and religious backgrounds. After all, writers style are very much influenced by their surroundings and period beliefs. This is a real reason why their are differing styles
3. Consider other constructive suggestions you have received and better yourself and your product.

Dmitry, inclusion is a key element of success; exclusion is a road to
narrow minded failure.

Good luck and thank you again for your efforts.

JVF

Of course, when a man wrote to him, Dmitry wrote back saying “thanks for your suggestions!” Although I wouldn’t rule out the possibility that that might be a result of critical mass at this point.

I hope that answers everybody I didn’t get around to replying to. Thanks for your comments and especially for passing on this discussion to others– I think a lot of people only saw one or two results from the meme and didn’t quite realize what was going on with it.

I am still disappointed that this thing is getting national news coverage, though. It’s sort of inspiring me to put some effort in to re-building my meme library once I move. We need a new OTP generator. That doesn’t exclude anybody on any basis apart from “Tea thinks that’s too hard to draw.”

I wrote to Dmitri of Codingrobots, the site responsible for “I Write Like” yesterday, after I posted about it, and linked him to my post.

I would feel remiss to share his response as it was a private email and I did not ask to, but he replied swiftly and promptly.

His response was in two parts. The first part disheartened me, as he said that the software couldn’t tell what race or gender the authors were. He seemed to think that my complaint was that *I* didn’t get a woman of color as my response to the meme.

He also said that he thinks men and women are stylistically similar so he didn’t see the big deal.

However, he closed by saying that if I wanted to recommend him some authors to add, to please do so.

I’ve sent him a list. If you want to send him one, his email address is dmitry [at] codingrobots [dot] com.

intrepia compiled a list of authors in the meme as of yesterday afternoon. If Dmitry’s estimate that there were 40 authors included is accurate, this is a complete or near-complete list:

Douglas Adams
Isaac Asimov
Margaret Atwood
Jane Austen
L. Frank Baum
Ray Bradbury
Dan Brown
Raymond Chandler
Lewis Carroll
James Fenimore Cooper
Daniel Defoe
Charles Dickens
Arthur Conan Doyle
Ian Fleming
Harry Harrison
Ernest Hemingway
James Joyce
Stephen King
Rudyard Kipling
Jack London
H. P. Lovecraft
Vladimir Nabokov
George Orwell
Chuck Palahniuk
Edgar Allan Poe
Mario Puzo
J. K. Rowling
J. D. Salinger
William Shakespeare
Iain Sinclair
Robert Louis Stevenson
Bram Stoker
Jonathan Swift
J. R. R. Tolkien
Leo Tolstoy
Mark Twain
Kurt Vonnegut
H. G. Wells
Oscar Wilde
PG Wodehouse

That list contains 37 white men and three white women. There is not a lone single author of color anywhere on the list. If I’ve somehow mistaken someone’s racial background, I apologize, and please correct me.

In other news, this post has gotten me a +1 for the day and a -1 for the day.

In +1 news, Margaret Atwood retweeted my tweet!

Pix, because it happened:

That sort of makes me feel like I’ve entered a magical alternate reality!

But in bad news, I had to screen a comment on my blog because someone actually left hate speech! With words I don’t care to repeat in it and everything. I was somewhat shocked. Fortunately, that is what screening is for.

ETA:

The (once again prompt) reply I got from the creator of the meme is so frustrating that I’m no longer feeling that I owe his privacy any respect. Here you go:

Tea,

Thanks for your reply. I’ve added more writers into the database
recently. But I *absolutely* will not add people into the database due
to their race or gender. I will not search for lists of white, black,
Asian, Hispanic, or any other types of people that you _took care to
differentiate_. All people are equal to me, and equality means not
looking at skin color or different types of chromosomes.

I think the question is closed.

–
Dmitry Chestnykh
I Write Like

I got my keys to my apartment, so next post will be empty!apartment pics!

Before I start this post, there is something I feel like I need to say.

After last week’s post, someone said that these fitness posts were triggering to them, but didn’t offer any details as to why. They asked me to cut them, and I said no.

That’s not something I will say very often, but in this case, for me, the purpose of making these posts is to challenge taboos about looking at bodies and discussing the way our bodies make us feel. It’s also for myself, to help me become more aware of the way I think about my body, and make me braver about my physical self. It’s very important for me, for the purposes of personal self-improvement, and putting these photos under a cut would not serve the same purpose.

I’m also troubled by the idea that photos of a woman in shorts and a sports bra could be so severely upsetting or cause such a severe physical reaction that someone can’t even look at them, especially since I see people dressed like this on the street when they’re jogging, or in less clothing when they’re swimming– or on billboards. Imagine how you would feel if someone told you that even a glimpse of your body could cause severe negative emotional or physical reactions to them. That really upset me. Even if it’s not what intended, it’s effectively saying “looking at your body makes me sick,” and I’m sure anyone who has ever had any kind of insecurities about the way they look or feel would be hurt if they heard that.

That being said, I realize that I have always been pretty healthy and able and for the past several years, on the slender side of normal as far as my body type. So if any of you ever take specific issue with something I say about body shapes or body types or anything like that, or think that anything I say shows an insensitivity toward other people’s bodies or ignorance about other people’s ability levels, please feel free to tell me what it is. I will try to listen and improve. After all, the purpose of these posts is to try to engage in body-positive thinking. But please don’t suggest that it’s bad for me to work on improving my self-image in my own journal in the way that I need to for myself.

On to this week!

So, last week I did my exercises every day but Friday, because we went to Delaware. So I didn’t get to take my pictures till today. I missed out on exercising yesterday but I walked a bit instead and I did some today.

I really enjoy stretching. I think it is my favorite type of exercise and it’s the one where I feel the most marked improvement every time I do it.

Once I move, I am going to get some weights and start working on my upper arm strength because I think that is the place where I am doing the least to improve my physical fitness. I feel like my upper body is very weak, especially my left arm, which is funny because that’s my dominant arm, so I really should start doing something about it. But a lot of the exercise routines are getting easier and easier. On a few of them, I still can’t do the “extra challenge” bits, but I can do most of the regular bits and that is making me really proud of myself. Especially when there’s this bit that I thought I was doing right all this time, and then I realized that my legs had become stronger and that in and of itself changed the way I did that exercise. It was a sudden realization of wow, so that’s how those muscles are supposed to work!
