When Umar emerged, the girl made a lunge for him. "Liar!"

Frantically she brushed Dareen's tattered hair out of the girl's face and stared in stunned amazement. "I don't . . . I really don't know. I can't tell if--what!" She slapped a hand to her face in surprise; Dareen, with very good aim, had managed to spit right in her eye.

She let out a pretty nasty curse when Dareen's bare foot hit her in the stomach, but at last got the girl's feet still, first by grabbing them and then by clamping them between her knees. She took the bag from Umar, looking wild-eyed and desperate. "Aye, please, get Mother." She almost laughed. "Gods, I'd almost kiss you now but . . . occupied."
