The line drew tighter. At the same time, something small and hard and accurate gave Elaine a clip across the ear, and the bench knocked itself over.

"HELP!" Elaine shouted, but she began to choke. She pulled out her knife and tucked the point of the blade between the cord and her skin to sever it.

Whatever had wrapped itself around Elaine's neck snapped apart and dropped her. From behind her came a grunt of disgust.
The ship's cook, a rather burly Aquitainean, came roaring into the galley at the first call for help. "Saints, it's a little girl!" he said in Aquitainean. He approached Elaine. "What has happened?"

Elaine collapsed when the cord snapped. She was on the floor, breathing heavily and rubbing her neck when the cook came over. "I don't-- I don't know!" she answered. Somebody-- something--tried to choke me," she finished, feeling around to try to find the end of the cord. "And threw something at me." She looked around for a culprit.

"Come up, little one." Angry and concerned all at once, the cook reached for Elaine's hand. He, too, looked around for the culprit. "There's no one else here. Are you all right?"
Whatever it was grabbed a wad of Elaine's hair and yanked.

Elaine shouted, and spun around to try to tackle whatever it is. "What the hell!" she shouted again. "Spider?!"

"A spider?" said the cook, baffled. "Where?"
Elaine was momentarily in possession of a definite solid, if invisible, shape--one that hissed and slapped her face before jerking itself free.

"There's an invisible person," Elaine said, grabbing at them again. "Do you have you can throw on them? Like water, or flour?"

The shape was gone the second time Elaine snatched at it. Well. As much as it is safe to determine whether an invisible person is there or not-there. Better to say that Elaine's grab missed.
The cook, who still only had a vague idea of what was happening, reached for Elaine's arms to draw her back. "Look here, calm down. Let's see." He tipped her head back to look at her neck, while still watching warily for another attack.

Elaine scrambled up, and tipped her head so he could see. "I don't think it's bad; it just hurts like hell," she said. "Um. I'm Elaine, by the way."
