"And Judith seemed to think everything was normal with you?" Andre asked Spider, very much giving the impression of hovering around her as they boarded the iron ship yet again. "There isn't-- there's nothing we should be doing differently, is there? I hate to sound like a bundle of nerves but it's the Tuatha part I don't know about."

"She said you've got to stay at least three yards away from me and that you can only ask me one question at a time." She gave him a playful shove to the shoulder and cackled. "Calm down! She didn't tell me much more'n she said in front of you. She said that since I seemed to take more after me mother's side than Da's it'd probably be a long pregnancy. Seven or eight months." She groaned and rubbed her stomach. "And that I'm still probably going to puke for another month or so."

"Good luck yer ain't needing to climb the riggings then, I'd hate to be the one that would clean up that mess." Jochy had popped up behind them, the way he sometimes did.
"It sounds like a damn long disease, is congratulations or condolences in order?"

Andre raised an eyebrow at Jochy. "Now, you...you have to stay three yards away from her," he warned. "And if you're going to be her assistant, that means you get to clean up the puke for the next...month?" he added cheerfully, as he gave Spider's back a rub. "Is there something we can feed you to help with your stomach?"
He looked back to Jochy. "Have you seen Sylvie?'

"She said bread would be good," Spider replied morosely. "But then she laughed. You know the laugh. The 'a thousand soliels would be good too' laugh."
Posted by: Jochy Melechen Apr 17 2008, 10:19 PM
"I can clean up puke if I'm ordered to. Since I am actually being damn serious about this." Jochy nodded, doing his best to seem like the responsible type. But in response to Andre he just shrugged. "Just got back on the ship myself, thought I'd check with you what yer plans was since Judes seems to be getting the hell out of here way too fast."
There was a tenseness to him that was fairly obvious, but he didn't say anything about what was bothering him. Not now.

Andre sighed and reached for Spider's shoulders. "We'll get you bread," he promised. "And a thousand soliels."
"Spider, do you want to talk things out with Jochy?" he asked. "I know I said you'd be all right aloft, but honestly-- I'm not concerned about you falling; I know you can climb, and no baby ever died from climbing. I'm concerned about you getting sick while you're thirty feet in the air," he told her dryly.
He shot her a smile, and started for his cabin. "And I'll be right back?"
Posted by: Spider Ceallaigh Apr 17 2008, 10:34 PM
"It depends who I manage to get sick on," she replied sweetly as Andre started away.
As Andre disappeared, however, whatever had been keeping Spider afloat this long seemed to deflate a little. She gave Jochy a bleak, tired look. "So. You get the rapid-fire course in sailmendin', I think." She shrugged and gestured him forward. "Come on, I'll show you me bench."

Jochy nodded, giving the woman a worried look. "Yer gonna be alright, right? Because you are pregnant I hope? And not just sick from this weird food?" He gave her a supporting smile and added "Well, knows the sowing bit, but that's more about making it look neat and fancy than making it sturdy." But he was a quick study.
When he wanted to.

Andre re-emerged a moment later, a piece of paper in his hand and a sharp divot in his brow. "Sylvie!" he called across the deck. "Jochy, when was the last time you saw Sylvie?"
Posted by: Jochy Melechen Apr 17 2008, 10:44 PM
"Ummm ain't exactly sure, she's been making herself scarce lately and we've all been damn busy with the dogs. How so?" He managed to look rather worried there. "Has anything happened to her?"
Posted by: Spider Ceallaigh Apr 17 2008, 10:51 PM
Though she couldn't see the note's contents, and in any case couldn't have read them, between Andre's tone and the note's very existence she could hazard a few educated guesses. "Ransom note, or she's scarpered?" she asked without a trace of humour.
Posted by: Andre Romain Apr 17 2008, 11:05 PM
"She's gone," he said, giving Spider a tense look. "It says she found passage to Africa."
He handed the note to Jochy. "You're not exactly sure as in sometime today, or...when? I want to figure out if there's time to find he."
Posted by: Jochy Melechen Apr 17 2008, 11:07 PM
"Yesterday I think. Before the dogs attacked." Jochy frowned, reading the note. "How long since you've been back here? I mean is there any way of telling how long since she left it? I mean, it's Si. If she's planning to run away I don't think she'd tell anyone if she knew they would have the time to stop her."
Posted by: Spider Ceallaigh Apr 17 2008, 11:12 PM
"Because if you're planning on scarperin' off to Africa, not tellin' anyone is the way to go," Spider concluded tartly. "Look, there can't be too many folks in this harbour that e'en know what Africa is, there should be some way to track her back." Before the sentence was fully out, though, she began to look ill for an entirely different set of reasons. "Oh, gods, unless someone bloody lied to her to get her aboard."

Andre took the note back. "There were these people in the inn the other day-- who said they-- I don't know. She seemed to think they could get us back, but when I asked the man-- he seemed very standoffish about it. I-- I think he told her yes, but when he realized I was involved-- in my uniform, no less? Then he said no."
He groaned. "Hell. I'm going to have to go see about this."
Posted by: Jochy Melechen Apr 17 2008, 11:20 PM
Jochy shot Spider a look. "Si's resourceful, she wouldn't let anybody pull her leg about something like this. She ain't the type to go off on a whim." At least he hoped so, because now he was getting nervous as well.
"Why would she leave without telling you lot to your face though?"
Posted by: Spider Ceallaigh Apr 17 2008, 11:23 PM
Spider raised a hand to volunteer Jochy's answer: "Because we might've tried to stop her? Because she's sixteen and they do this shit a lot?" She scowled and stamped her foot, then turned to Andre. "So these folks'd be the first candidates? Do we know who they are?"
Posted by: Andre Romain Apr 17 2008, 11:36 PM
"No idea," Andre said. "It was a-- another Frenchman, actually, and a mute girl." He scratched his head. "The minute I walked in, they were all in a rush to leave-- I assume they hate Aquitaine like everyone else around here," he said with a sigh.
Posted by: Jochy Melechen Apr 17 2008, 11:42 PM
"Comes with the uniform I guess..." Jochy looked thoughtful, then shook his head. "I can't remember seeing her with any people that matches that description."
Well, at least that part as true.
"She's that desperate to get back, eh? I guess she must be. With things being the way they are in the Erins, it ain't like you can go back like you planned." Jochy sighed. "Maybe she got impatient."
Posted by: Spider Ceallaigh Apr 17 2008, 11:54 PM
Spider gave Andre a look somewhere between embarrassed and I-told-you-so. Then she shook out her shoulders. "Frenchman, or a pommer?" she asked. "An it's another Frenchman, same thing applies: there can't be too many of them about. Damn, I wish we knew how long she's been gone; we can see if anyone's left out between then and now."
Posted by: Andre Romain Apr 17 2008, 11:58 PM
"Well, unless I'm going blind in my old age, this note wasn't here this morning," Andre said. "It's just a question of going up and down the docks, I suppose...Merde," he swore, and gave Spider a pained look. "I'm sorry."
Posted by: Jochy Melechen Apr 18 2008, 12:00 AM
"You're not -that- old..." Jochy offered helpfully. "If she placed it herself that is, she could just as well have told one of the crew to put it in your office, I don't think anybody would have thought it weird. Dwarves ain't that curious a bunch I think."
Posted by: Spider Ceallaigh Apr 18 2008, 12:09 AM
Spider looked impatient. "Look, I'm not sayin' we go find her and yank her off if she's this set on goin'," she said wearily. "I am sayin' we go find her and figger out if this deal's legit. We're in the middle of Cecilia. What's the odds of someone leavin' from here to anything like your side of this?"
Posted by: Andre Romain Apr 18 2008, 12:11 AM
"The man said he knew Hartley," Andre said wearily. "He said he picked up Hartley and his brother in England. I-- but we don't even know that that's who she ended up with, do--"
He frowned. "I suppose we could ask Hartley?"
Posted by: Jochy Melechen Apr 18 2008, 12:14 AM
"Or his brother. And Spider, hell... since when has anything lately been obeying any odds? The unlikelier it seems, the more likely it happens in my book. How else would you explain this bloody situation."
Posted by: Spider Ceallaigh Apr 18 2008, 12:25 AM
Spider's expression darkened. "First off, before we do anything else--I say we figure out some way of keepin' in touch with the Red. Too much is happenin' that affects the lot of us and it's gettin' too risky to run messages. Elaine's still got that mirror she used to talk to the countess; we could find Si that way, too."
Posted by: Andre Romain Apr 18 2008, 12:28 AM
Andre sighed. "Right, but there's only one mirror," he pointed out. "We...it's not a problem for them to get messages to us; it's a problem for us to get messages to them. I think we'd all like better contact, considering, but-- have you got an idea?" he asked, then looked to Jochy. "You?"
Posted by: Jochy Melechen Apr 18 2008, 12:31 AM
"Crafting something that good is waaaay out of my league. Most things I do are pretty short ranged. Best thing I can think of is to actually set up a schedule, say they call in once a day at... noon or something. That way we can have some regular contact, and if they don't one day, we at least know something has happened."
Jochy shrugged and pondered. "You want me to run over and get Elaine with the mirror? If she's on the Red that is... which I think she should be."
Posted by: Andre Romain Apr 18 2008, 12:37 AM
Andre nodded, then waved for Jochy to go. "Yes, go," he answered, looking more and more concerned. "I'm just worried we're wasting time."
Posted by: Jochy Melechen Apr 18 2008, 12:39 AM
"Andre, don't sweat it. Regardless, Si can take care of herself. She's the one with most bloody sense in the entire family. But I'll hurry."
And with that he took off, grateful to avoid any further questions.
