Ariel raced down the street toward the docks, her braid flapping behind her and her cheeks red from exertion.

She had to pause, halfway, to catch her breath, her chest heaving with the short gasps of air she took.

"Bloody hell, are the dogs out and about again?" Jochy had recognized the girl from last night, she was the italian's sister or something? He thought. But running like that was never a good sign...

He had spent some time wandering around after talking to Seth, mostly because it had made him feel like crap. Utter crap. It seemed that every time that he got together with Seth, all his good intentions came to naught.

He was blaming the man still.

It was hard not to.

Looking around he didn't spot anything dangerous, but he still remained on the balls of his feet, almost hoping for something, anything to kill. Except dogs. They were still bloody scary.

"You!" Ariel said, almost accusingly, and stepped over to Jochy. "No! No, I'm trying to find my brother and the Countess and-- you, actually. That crazy man who's married to my brother's friend the crazy lady is your father, right?"

"He ain't exactly crazy but..." Jochy grimaced, giving her a slightly worried look. "Nialla and yer brother is probably back at the inn making out if you fancy catching them... what's happened?"

"I do not fancy catching them-- ew! I'm still trying to figure out how the hell he even landed that one; she's--" Ariel shook her head, helpless. "Good. So, I didn't tell him you were here or you were there when the dogs came, but one of the dogs bit him and he-- the girl in black everybody's talking about? She's trying to hire him or something to replace the general!"

"She ain't a fish you know, she's not something to be caught or landed." Jochy didn't seem to have any problems playing catchup with her switch in subjects, there were some perks to have from growing up with a crazy mother.

"And you met Him? Fuck." Jochy cursed bitterly, giving her another and quite more worried look. "Thanks for not telling Him, I really don't want to meet him even if the bastard probably knows already. He knows everything. he always did." He shivered, then what she had said actually registered through the fear. "She's trying to do what? Oh I KNEW that little black skirted bitch wasn't to be trusted. I KNEW it. Oh hell... so she's working with Him. We're doomed." The sigh was heavy.

"But... the general? Replacing him? Why? What's so special about him?"

"I think he's the God of time, or something. He can slow things down and speed them up and make them look like other things, like healing cuts or rusting through bells," Ariel answered. "And she asked your father to take his job, only he doesn't know yet if he wants it, I think. He said he doesn't wish me any harm, but he said he split your mother up into chronal templates and wants to use the Countess to stick her brain into or something so she won't be crazy anymore."

"Okay..." Jochy held up a hand before she continued, looking at the girl like she was raving. "Time? Is the woman mad? I mean hell, like He NEEDS any more powers, especially over that. Then He could have anything just the way He wanted. And he did what to my mother? And Nialla? What the hell, is that why he's been talking to her? Is he gonna use her for this?"

His hans had closed into very fight fists by now.

"He wants to!" Ariel replied. "That's why I was running. Only he said she has to follow a path first. He wanted to check that she was on the path. And he knows things about my brother, too. I don't know what the path is though, I only got a certain number of questions to ask and he said I couldn't ask any more about that once he caught on."

"Oh fuck. Oh fuck." Jochy chewed on his lip, looking as if he was likely to either punch something, or turn tail and run.

"Like I said, He knows everything. He always did. No matter how much you tried to hide it. I know He's been checking up on Nialla in the past, but... I never knew why. So this is why."

He swallowed heavily, looking even paler than normal. "Oh hell I need a drink."

"I think there are over two hundred pubs in this town," Ariel pointed out. "If you want a drink, I don't think we have to look very far. How the hell did you end up so normal?"

That made Jochy crack a grin at first, then an outright laugh.

"Oh ask anyone, I ain't normal. But I did run away from home when I wa a kid and never returned." He still looked as if someone had pissed in his beer, but at least his fists weren't clenched anymore.

"Come then, I'll buy you what you fancy, and you tell me more about this shit."

"Just a beer," Ariel said. "And maybe some cake? The General had cake but Constanzia was crying." She let out a frustrated breath. "I think the girl in black told Lysander he could have cake and then told the General to serve cake but neither of them knew what the cake was about."

Jochy looked around for the nearest place to get a drink, and settled for a place where they could sit outside. He ordered Ariel a beer and some cake, at least he thought so 'cause his cecilian was rather rusty. He also ordered himself a beer, and something stronger.

Then he sighed.

"Lysander, who the hell is he? But that sounds like the girl in black alright, never says anything straight out, always manipulating our arses of. Except for Him obviously, that seems to be getting bloody headhuted. Doesn't the woman know evil when she sees it?" He downed his little shot of whatever, it was strong enough to make him cough.

"Lysander is my brother, duh." Ariel rolled her eyes. "The one who's calling himself Marcello?"

She gave Jochy a cheerful pat on the back at the cough. "Steady as she goes, big boy," she teased. "Look, the General says she's smitten with him or something. The girl in black. Serafina or fima or whatever her name is."

"I only knew him as Marcello, so he's got two names eh?" Jochy cleared his throat, grabbing at the beet with one hand before taking a deep drink from it.

He shouldn't have done that, because her las comment almos caused him to choke. "Smitten?" He raised his voice, giving her a look of pure disgust. "She's SMITTEN with the miserable evil rapist son of a bitch?" It sounded incredulous, but the girl would have no reason to lie.

Ariel laughed out loud. "Oh, he's got a lot of names. A lot," she answered, downing a gulp of beer. "He doesn't really use the same one twice. His real name is really Adonis."

She raised an eyebrow. "I didn't know the raping part. Who'd he rape? Your mother?"

"Adonis? Oh that's gold to know..." Jochy's smile grew evil and thin before it disappeared altogether.

Instead he put both hands around the beer, holding it steadily. "No."

That was the only word he said before he continued "So did He say -how- he was going to use Nialla to help my mother?"

"It's Adonis Lysander Quattro Jones," Ariel replied. "And I'm Miranda. Only apparently I'm not allowed to make up fake names, and he is. I told you. He messed up your mother's chronal templates, so she...every day is like a different place to her? So he needs someone whose chronal templates aren't messed up. I think. That's what it sounded like. And he's going to make the Countess her new vessel, if the Countess follows the right path."

Right at that moment he looked more than ready to just kill his father had he appeared.

"Right. I sort of expected 'Sander would have the same response, but yours is good enough," Ariel said. She gave the man a quizzical look. "Who are you, even? I mean, you know who I am, but as far as I know, you're just some guy."

"Well, I am just some guy. Alright..." Jochy took a drink and tried to relax his grip on the mug. "Jochy Melechen. Sort of a former mage, currently working as a sailmender. An old friend of the Countess... even if she might be royally pissed with me now, I knew her father quite well. And no, I ain't that old, it's just I spent some time in a place that time... well, doesn't go like it does here."

He shook his head, giving her a wry look "Oh what the hell, yer gonna hear it soon enough anyway. I had a crush on her father when I was a lot younger, slept with him, that's how I knew him. And how I met the Countess. I'm also recently divorced, and people will tell you I sleep around with anything. Which used to be true but ain't anymore."

He took another drink, then asked "So, why did you leave him then? Was he that bad in bed?"

Ariel laughed. "I didn't really have anything to compare him to, did I?" she asked. "It was...um. All right, I suppose?" she answered. "And I didn't leave him; he left me. I woke up in the morning and he was gone."

She made a face. "That's still disgusting. I only thought ship's boys did that. And the Greeks."

There was almost a wistful sigh there, he loved Elaine, but there was no changing that she was a girl.

"Yeah, I know." Jochy's shoulders sagged a bit. "Thanks. Not that she ever was much of one."

He suddenly rose from the table, giving her a nod. "You go find them, alright? If they ain't at the inn, go down to the docks and check for the ship The Red Morning. There is something I need to check out. Now."

He frowned, then rose, giving her a nod, then left.
