 ACORN RUNS AMOK
Marcello was not really looking where he was going, as he had had the bright idea of making himself some Tuathailli vocabulary flash cards so that he could become better-acquainted with terminology important to local governance. He was staring at them, and not at the hall in front of him, which usually worked out well enough, since the building was very obliging as far as putting soft tapestries on any walls he might potentially bump into.

 Re: ACORN RUNS AMOK
From up the hallway came a tiny gasp, followed by a scrambling sound.

Marcello looked up, tripping over his foot. "Hello?" he called, as he righted himself, and stuffed the cards into his sleeve. "Is everything all right?"

 Re: ACORN RUNS AMOK
Dareen started to double-back, but the passage abruptly ended just behind her. A boiling rage, coupled by the crushing sense of being tricked, flooded her. Her chin wobbled. "Everything is fine. Leave me alone!"

Marcello jerked a little bit at the girl's apparent rage. "Ah. Is there anything I can do to help?" he asked. "I'm not sure you should be wandering the halls alone."

The girl sized him up cautiously. She put a little more wobble to her chin, and somehow managed to pick up his accent: "I'm lost. I can't find my mu-mumma." She scrubbed at an eye with her fist. "I'm not s'posed to talk to strangers."

Marcello sighed. "This is my home," he said. "So if you'll do me the kindness of just speaking to me a little bit, I might be able to help you find your mother. You may call me Marcello," he told her gently, as he scrutinized her appearance. "What shall I call you?"

"I'm called Mefein," the girl replied, still regarding him with utmost suspicion. "This is your house?"

Marcello nodded. "I'm the Earl of Cnoch-na-Niall," he explained. "Who is your mother? I'll try to find her for you? Is she visiting for the wedding?"

 Re: ACORN RUNS AMOK
"Wedding?" she asked, confused. "Ah. I don't think so? We were just . . . visiting. We live near the forest," she explained nicely. "By the river. In a house."
