Re: Duncan is married Dee's tummy, 24 Dumann
"My parents had a dozen babies," he reminded her. "It's not as attractive in practice as in theory. It always goes wrong around the tail-end, and then the youngest one comes around and stabs you in the back."

"Oh, is that you?" Dierdre asked cheerily. "Have you stabbed anyone lately?"

"Metaphorically, not literally," he replied cheerfully. "And never anyone who didn't have it coming. Would the countess be terribly offended if I did in her grandfather? I don't know if she's attached to him, but he has been around for a long while. I think it's best to let it go."

Dierdre groaned. "At the moment, I think everyone would be grateful to you if you did it," she replied. "Nialla and her grandfather are not getting on well at all. Anyway, I was just going to have a dozen babies at once, and then there wouldn't be a youngest."

"We'd be farming them out in short order," he said wistfully. "At least I probably would. I'd forget all their names. Lose them at fairs, accidentally bring home other people's. I've been having nightmares about that happening, you know."

Dierdre laughed. "You will not lose the babies," she assured him. "There will only be two, and they might not even be matching. If they are, we'll cut their hair differently, or putd different-colored bows on their wrists."

"You're either too optimistic about these babies or too optimistic about me," he replied. He looked sober. "I'm trying not to fuss over you. I'm worried that the alternative to fussing is going to be standing over you like the countess's fucking wolf and snarling at anything that gets close."

"I love you and I love the babies," Dierdre replied. "I don't think that is too optimistic." She grinned. "You've been doing your share of snarling," she assured him. "I think it's sort of sweet."

"Well, if I'm snarling, at least I'm snarling over your babies." He raised his eyebrows and asked hopefully, "Our babies?"

She took his hand and moved it in a circle over her belly. "Ours," she said. "You love them as much as I do. Sometimes I think you might even love them more. Ours."
