"Really?" Marcello asked. "Completely unchanged? Because that's not what I've been led to believe. I've lost a year of memories, some of them very bad and some very good. If I get them back, will I really be unchanged?"

She lifted a shoulder in a faintly bored shrug. "Change is what you do. Mortals do little else, so far as I have seen. I do not change," she added lightly, as if that were a point of pride with her. "But if you mean, will you be changed back to what you once were, then no. You will simply gain back what you had." She gave him a sober look, her depthless black eyes watching his expression. "Do you understand me?"

"You must change," Marcello replied. "I suspect it is only more slowly than we do, so no one would ever notice. You're saying I'll remember?" he asked. "I'll retain my memories of being this way?"

She shrugged again. "Is there still a shadow once the shape moves away? Why?" She looked curious. "To lose oneself is a terrible prospect. Are you afraid you will disappear?"

"Well, no, there isn't a shadow once the shape moves away," Marcello pointed out. "I...yes, I am. I'm afraid that the man I've become isn't the man I'd want to be."

The Ganconner, who had by this time turned around and begun walking backwards so that she could look at him as they spoke--or, more accurately, so that she could look at him in general--suddenly frowned and stopped moving entirely. "Then we go no further."

"What?" Marcello asked, looking confused. "I think you misunderstand me. I'm afraid, yes, but people do things they're afraid of all the time because they know it's the right thing to do."

The Ganconner wasn't budging. "If you know what is the right thing to do now, you need not change," she said. "If you become another, you are subject to his judgement. Since you say you do not wish you be him, then his judgement must be wrong."

"I don't know him," Marcello answered. "But being him is the right thing to do. Your granddaughter needs him. There are other people who need him. I can't be the person they need."

The young woman looked faintly concerned, as much as the Ganconner was genuinely confused or concerned about anything . . . which was to say, she looked a great deal like a sensitive four-year-old who has just learned that babies do not come from bluebells. "And so the person you need must fall by the wayside. I suppose it is best to please the larger numbers first. Or else your word for 'need' differs from mine."
