Marcello tugged his hand away. "Ah...i'm not so sure Niabheara would be happy to have you do that," he said, apologetically, although he looked sorry indeed. "Are you saying the Puck didn't do this to me? Someone else did? Who...who would do it?"

"I was not charged with who would and would not," said the Ganconner, quite primly. "For that matter, I care not what my granddaughter would and would not have. I was set to find who did, and now I have done." She tugged his arm gently, pouting, and leaned her body toward the stairs. "Please? The very air is hooks and shards."

He nodded, and started down the stairs. "Then tell me," he replied, frowning with consternation. "Who did?"

"She is a shapeshifter," said the Ganconner, with a hint of the same sweet, eager, how-clever-am-I-to-have-figured-this-out tone. "I have followed her through three seemings to be sure. Now she has gone to ground. If we hurry we shall catch her as she slumbers."

Marcello nodded. "Of course," he agreed. "Lead away. I can keep up."

The Ganconner seemed reluctant to let go his arm, either out of still being cold--on the stairs, it was obvious that among other things, she wasn't wasn't wearing shoes--or because the Ganconner simply didn't like losing skin-to-skin contact wherever she found it. At the bottom of the stairs she installed herself as close as she could get to him. "What will become of you, when you have been reborn?" she asked.

"Reborn?" Marcello asked, raising an eyebrow. "I, ah...hadn't thought of it that way, but..." He tugged at his earlobe. "I don't know," he admitted. "I'm worried about it, I can't lie."

"If you are worried then why did you agree?" The Ganconner, momentarily distracted by his gesture, reached up and tugged his earlobe herself.

"Ah..." Marcello moved his ear out of her reach. "I...because," he answered. "It seemed like the right thing to do. Isn't it?" he asked. "I mean, this isn't how I'm meant to be always, is it?"

"How should I know?" she asked. "Do you know what way you would be always? What were you before you were this?" She tapped a finger on his chin, looking deep into his eyes. "I see a dark spot, like a shadow on the moon. That would be the spell. But beneath it all, the moon is there unchanged."
