"If they wanted to come," she repeated after him. "The new lady hasn't done nothin' for us and it's hard times if they do somethin' for her. Anyways, she's cursed. No one can even get that far north, with the snows. You'll be goin' straight into it."

"There will be snow then, really? Much snow?" Maalech bounced after her, only then realizing what had been said. "Wait... is she curse? I mean really cursed? With what?"

"No," Marcello said. "The snow stopped. It's melted," he said, a bit triumphantly. "She isn't cursed. And she'll do something for them. She won't expect them to work without doing something for them."

She gave Marcello a dark look and then trudged along, eyes forward. "Cursed," she repeated, sounding as if she was savouring it. "They all end up bein' murdered. Betrayed." She gave Marcello an amused look. "I wonder if you'll be the one to kill her. I can say I knew you when."

"I wonder who would have cast a curse like that! Maalech pondered. "It must have been someone really powerful, if it's real." If it was real, it was horrible, but if it was not, it would be kinda boring.

"But if someone has done something, it can be undone. Right?" He sounded a little worried about that.

"It's not real," Marcello said dismissively. "There's no curse. And I thought just the last one was murdered."

"Oh, you may say," she said. "But the last lady was murdered, her son was killed, the one before that poisoned herself, her husband cut his wrists in despair--it's all fated, you watch. Don't get too attached to a Niall, there'll be another one along presently."

"She poisoned herself?" Marcello asked. "Mabhe's mother? And--" He frowned. "No one told me that."

Asphodel gave him a fine, fiendish grin; apparently this sort of news-dropping was what she lived for. "Swallowed foxglove in wine and then went walking in the woods until she dropped. They search two weeks for her, and by the time they found her body, she'd been chewed on by animals. No fingers or feet to her. They found one of her foot in a goblin's den, eaten down to the white bones, and had to bury her without the other."

Marcello looked a bit ill. "I didn't know that," he admitted. "Do you...why? Does anyone know?"
