 Re: On the Road to . . . , 1 Equos, Afternoon
"You are a very disagreeable mouse," he said. "Here." He forked over the last bite of his own biscuit. "If you're eating, you're not talking. And we need to move."

"What, you can't walk and talk at the same time? Face it," the mouse said, in between biscuit-munching, "Out of the women in my general age range you could've gotten stuck toting in your pocket? You got the best one."

"The rest of them were the Princess, my daughter, and the witch's apprentice, and any of them would have made a negotiable hostage," he pointed out. "Then again, the Princess is a flake and the apprentice involves dealing with the witch. So you make a point."

"I wasn't thinking so much of usefulness as I was pleasant companionship," the mouse explained, and she navigated the way from his boot to his pocket with stunning agility. "And sense of humor."

"Or constant companionship? You might've asked, I could've just lifted you." He pulled open the drawstring for her. "Don't rummage," he said, even though he had no idea how she could avoid rummaging. "Here, I'll leave it untied. It'd be a shame if you smothered."

"Oh, look, I'm growing on you already," the mouse said cheerfully. It climbed, nose-first, into his pocket. And rummaged, because it mostly couldn't help it. And because it wanted to. "Oooh, ladies' jewelry!" it exclaimed, nosing around. "And...teeth? Um, do you have a handkerchief? I hate to be a bother but everything in here is kind of hard."

"Stay out of that!" he snapped. "For god's sake . . . here." He couldn't find a handkerchief, but produced one of the pair of fur-lined gloves he had snitched from a guard. "Don't chew on it. Yes, they are teeth. No they are not mine."

"I assumed they weren't yours, considering you have a mouth full of them," the mouse pointed out. "I'm not stupid."
She stuffed the glove down into his pocket, then climbed inside. "Hm. Cozy."

 Re: On the Road to . . . , 1 Equos, Afternoon
"Nice. Take a nap or something." He moved around to the treeline, trying to get a clear view of the main road--or 'wide flat open grassless space'--parallel to the forest. There was a sound close by but he couldn't quite make it out to be hoofbeats or not. "We have fellow travellers," he said in a low, amused voice to the mouse.

The mouse blinked its beady eyes up at him. "You sound surprised," she said. "Is this not a place there usually are travellers?"
