"Except perhaps in a very roundabout way," Neely remarked.
Simon looked with interest at Neely. "Is he your brother or something?" he asked Miranda.
"Not hardly," said Neely. "I don't suffocate if I don't speak for ten heartbeats."

"Ten heartbeats is much too long for my brother to go without talking," Miranda retorted. "Um, it's sort of...well, he's more like a very distant cousin," she said kindly. "Through marriage. Reluctantly. I'm one of you," she told them. "He's Tuatha. He's just taking care of me because we're sort of stuck together now that I'm shaped like a mouse."

"I'm tired," Peter said abruptly.
Simon looked disappointed. "But I want to talk some more. Where are we going?"
Peter let his head nod forward. "You talk. I'm going back to sleep."
Simon gave their shoulder a jerk. "Come on, I can't talk if you're snoring on me."

Miranda laughed. The laugh was especially disconcerting coming from a mouse-- possibly moreso than the speaking. "That's got to be hard!" she exclaimed. "I can't imagine having to drag someone with me everywhere I go. It must be very uncomfortable for you..." She sighed, looked at Neely, and back at the boys. "It might be better if you rest up," she said seriously. "We've been traveling a while, too. I don't even know how much mice need to sleep."
