Re: The Case of the Invisible Strangler, 1 Samon, Night
Judith sucked in her lower lip and went absolutely white-faced with fury. She understood, however, that now was not the moment for knocking the surgeon cross-eyed.

The surgeon paid the questions no heed. "Thank you, that will be all, men, we'll handle it from here--" He snapped the door closed in all their faces.
It was one of the sailors who replied. "It's not the devil-weed. Someone tried to garrote him while the watch was changing."

Lang's lip curled, and she shot a sympathetic look at the door. "Hope he wasn't your friend." Her brows furrowed. "Who garroted him? Who garrotes people?"

"What?!" Andre asked simultaneously to Barbara. "Who? Did you catch the person who did it?"

The second sailor shrugged. "Not a clue, miss. The other marine came a little late to watch and found him like that."
"Lucky thing, too," remarked the first. "He's still breathing but it doesn't look so good for him, no."

Judith's eyes narrowed. "The other marine? The pair of them, the ones set to the pirate?"

The sailor shook his head. "It couldn't have been the pirate, madame. Pirate's still where he should be."

Lang crossed her arms. "You garrote... that's a strangling? With string and rope? And it's not the pirate." She looked disapprovingly at Andre.

"Yes, that's garroting. And what are you looking at me for?" Andre asked, looking hurt.

Without realising what she was doing, Judith quietly stepped between Barbara and Andre and gave the other woman a look as if daring her to cross an invisible line on the floor. "Who is looking after the pirate?" she asked the sailors.
