Andre and Rosie (and Planchette!), evening, 20 Cantlos
Since she had been exiled from the kitchen, Rosemary wandered about the deck trying to both find something meaningful to do and to stay out of everyone else's way. In the end someone had given her all the remaining cutlery in one pail, another pail of water, and a fibre scrubbing brush, and told her to go to. It was boring work, but productive.

"Er, Rosemary?" Andre asked as he approached, scratching his scruffy chin. "Miss? Do you have a moment?"

With some relief, Rosemary raised her eyes from the pair of tongs she had been scouring, rolled her neck to get the crick out of it, and got to her feet, only a little wobbly from being hunched over. "Monsieur?"

Andre smiled and cleared his throat. "I wanted to talk to you about the ghost, if that's all right," he said. "I...you see, my wife...the one before Spider? She's a ghost, and I know a little more about them than everyone else here. So I thought I could help."

The girl's eyes widened slightly as she assured herself that yes, this gentleman had just claimed to have been married to a ghost--and that she had not misheard him say that he had been married to a goat. "Er . . . " She brushed down her skirts. "Have you been in the kitchen yet? I think it's still in the same state it was when we left it."

"I haven't," Andre admitted. "But I wanted to ask you if...if you remember anything that happened right before it started bothering you? Sometimes ghosts get in a bad temper because of something someone's done, and it's...it's never anything you could have avoided, you know. But it helps to figure out how to put them right again."

"Miss Lang already asked me about this," she said, brows folded together in worry. "I can't think of anything that I hadn't done before. I told her that I might have been singing to myself, but I'd done that before too and nothing out-of-the-way happened. I have been trying to think of something more, but when you do the same kind of thing every day . . . "

"It's all right," Andre said reassuringly. "You...do you remember what song you were singing, maybe?"

"I'm not sure. J'ai rencontre une belle? I sing that one a lot. Or . . . " She paused. "Oh dear. I think . . . the first day something really obvious happened, I broke something. Well, I didn't break it; I couldn't have. It was a knife. It hit the edge of the oven and the blade snapped in two. I gave it to the smith to fix it but he said it was no good, it was too old to bother with."

"Do you...did you throw it away, or do you still have it?" Andre asked. "Was it like a cooking knife, or a fighting knife, or a work knife?" he asked. "And how much longer after that did the ghost start?"
