"... like a ghost?"

He looked at her, then back at the door. His jaw seemed to tighten, and he stood up a bit straighter and headed, determined, towards the door.

Rosemary winced and followed him, with her eyes squinched shut, too scared to see what might even be going on inside.

Which was, fortunately, nothing. The pot that fell before Barbara and Rosemary left still lay on the floor, as did the contents of the flung drawer. The floor felt gritty and alive underfoot, caused by a sack of meal the contents of which had been carefully sprinkled to coat the entire floor. There were bare footprints running across it.

"Well, the captain won't be pleased to see -that- money wasted," Ashon murmured as he looked at the floor. Without thought he grabbed the broom beside the door, beginning to sweep up the meal as best he could even as he took in everything else.

"Certainly looks like a whirlwind went a-runnin' through here. You sure it weren't someone on th' ship?" He said, gesturing to the footprints in the meal. "Were you here when it happened, or did you find it this way?"

Still, he was mostly sweeping to keep his hands from going unsteady. His voice had gone very very carefully lighthearted, rehearsed, almost. Even if it was someone from the crew while Rosie had been out, that meant someone was messing with his galley. His cooking pots. His knives. He had worked very hard on getting everything right...

"This wasn't here." She gestured to the floor. "This has happened since we shut it up. And the place has been under watch."

"So no one's been in here, an' this happens." Ashon paused in his sweeping, leaning thoughtfully on his broom. He turned his brooding-face towards the pot lying on the floor before he walked over to it and picked it up, putting it back in its rightful place.

"Funny thing is, I used to think ghosts were just... makin' shit up to explain why stuff happens. I've had that jarred out of me a bit, since then." He turned to look at her, then around at the mess the galley had become.

"You were worried it'd make me nervous to know," he said, not-quite-flatly. "Does that mean you think it's somethin' to do with what the ship were for before?"

"It seemed most likely, considering all that's happened here," she said. "I don't know if anything like this has happened anywhere else, but there's people all over the ship, all the time, so you'd think that someone would have seen something else if there was." She swallowed, not liking where this was going.

Ashon shook his head, slowly. "They'd raise one hell of a loud complaint if they were havin' trouble, I know this crew. There's not a single thing happens here th' whole ship's not damn aware of in five minutes' time."

He laid a hand on the wall beside the pot he'd just hung up, like he was comforting it.

"So just th' kitchen then. But I haven't seen anything," he said slowly, turning around to look at her again. "An' thus far nothin's happened around me, an' I've been cook on this ship for a while now. So, why now?"

"Miss Lang--well, Barbara--suggested that it only happened around me," she said timidly. "That whatever . . . it didn't like me being here without you. Nothing's happened while you were working alone, has it? And it's not happened when we were here together."

Ashon looked at her blankly, then let out a bark of laughter that was only a little uneasy and put his hands over his face, staring at his reflection in the underside of the pot before dropping his hands and turning back to her.

"Lang thinks the galley's jealous of you?"

"Maybe it just knows I wasn't here before and thinks I shouldn't be here now?" she said, a bit timidly. As in reply, the drawer she was standing next to shot out and hit her in the elbow. "Ouch!" She cupped her elbow and the drawer slid shut, with a rattle that sounded like a chuckle.
