The clouds hid the sun, but there was no rain and even if the wind was cold as hell Jochy didn't mind it.

Better that than the sun right now, because if the sun had been out the ship would have stunk like a bloody abattoir. As it was, you didn't notice that until you visited the prisoners belowdeck... and he had stayed away from them since yesterday.

No, instead he was one of the people stuck on the less than pleasant detail of scrubbing the deck. The blood had to go, and yesterday everybody had been too busy with prisoners and the wounded.

Still, he didn't look too annoyed where he scrubbed, whistling a bit as he worked on a particular nasty stain that had pooled along the railing, getting stuck in the cracks there.

"No good." A heavy bag of sand suddenly dropped down beside him, and Spider crouched down next to it. "It's down in the grain, it's gonner have to be sanded out. And please don't tell Andre I've been luggin' around sandbags all mornin'."

She tapped him across the shoulder. "'Sides, there's twenty people should be scrubbin' decks instead of you. You're my mate, you help me."

Jochy jumped, laughed, then sat up and stretched his back. "Well, needed to do something to work off some energy, I li... don't mind sewing, but it ain't exactly something that deals with yer adrenaline. And I've been on a rush since yesterday."

It wasn't like he could do the other thing he wanted when he felt like this, which was sleeping with someone. So, his best bet was to tire himself out.

And stay away from Jack. That man was the first really dangerous one he'd met since deciding to go straight for Elaine.

"So, what yer need help with? The uniforms? Think a lot of them are soaking out the blood, though they might be dry enough to work with now. Or yer want me to lug the sand for you?" He flexed a bit, apparently in a splendid mood this morning. "Can be all macho if yer fancy... and I won't tell Andre. The man's about ready to burst at the seams with fatherhood as it is."

"When I fell asleep last night, he were talking to my stomach," Spider said with a roll of her eyes. "I don't know whether he does it because it makes me laugh or because he thinks the baby can hear him already."

Her mood dampened a little bit. "The biggest work we've got to do right now is gonner be . . . ah. They sort of . . . salvaged uniforms from last night. Before they chucked folks o'er the side. So we have to, um. Go through 'em and see what can be used o'er again."

"He was out smoking last night, think he was too worked up to sleep... gave me a proper lecture about what to do if I got Elaine pregnant. I think he's seeing babies behind ever bush..." Jochy grimaced, then got to his feet with a groan.

"Still..." He brushed his hands against his pants, drying them somewhat "... that's gonna be one loved and wanted child."

There was an almost fond smile there as he glanced at her stomach, then nodded "Alright, sorting through the dead men's clothes. Don't worry Spider, it ain't like I'm squeamish."

"It's not so much squeamish. I just think it's a damn tight-fisted thing to do. Strip the uniforms so that the next poor sap they sign on can wear it . . . I bet if them'd been officers, they'd at least let 'em sink down with their stripes still on."

Angry, she brushed down her own red skirts, though they were, at this hour of the morning, still almost spotless. Then, quite abruptly, she clutched her stomach and belched. "Sorry." She grinned at Jochy. "One of the joys of motherhood."

"I think that settles it. It's gonna be a boy." Jochy grinned at the belch. "And I bet you anything Andre would think that was the most adorable thing ever."

Well, he supposed he could understand it, he still found it rather weird that there was another living thing growing inside Spider like a bloody parasite. But a cute parasite. He supposed.

"And every goverment pinches their pennies. I suppose that is expected. Still, when yer dead yer dead. Yer ain't caring too much what yer be wearing."

He was surprisingly callous about death.. or, well, maybe not surprising.
